What parents need to know

🏀
Who are we?

Kingston Wildcats School of Basketball is a not-for-profit youth club affiliated to Basketball England. We provide basketball for ages 8–18 across CVL and National Basketball League competition from Chessington Sports Centre.

📍
Where do we train?

All sessions are held at Chessington Sports Centre, Garrison Lane, Chessington, KT9 2JS. Free parking is available (limited spaces). We recommend arriving a few minutes early, especially for evening sessions.

💰
What does it cost?

Squad membership fees are reviewed annually at our AGM and set to cover facilities, game fees and player equipment only. All fees are reinvested into the club — nothing is taken as profit. Contact Fi for current season pricing.

📋
How do we register?

Once your child is offered a squad place, registration is completed through PlayHQ — Basketball England's official platform. All members sign a Code of Conduct before joining. A registration link is provided when a place is offered.

👨‍🏫
Who are our coaches?

All coaches are qualified, DBS-checked and committed to long-term player development. Our Child Welfare Officer is Louise Wadham. Meet the full coaching team →

📈
What is the pathway?

Players progress from Saturday beginner sessions through CVL squads towards National League competition. Our development model is aligned to Basketball England's Player Development Framework. See the full pathway →

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most often from new and existing families. Can't find your answer? Contact Fi on 07725 333 185.

My child is new to basketball — where do we start?
The best place to start is our Saturday beginner sessions at Chessington Sports Centre. No experience, no kit and no booking are needed — just turn up. Sessions run every Saturday: 1:30–2:30pm for children 12 and under, and 2:30–3:30pm for ages 12–18. The cost is £3.50 per person (£3.00 cash). Session details →
Do I need to book for the Saturday sessions?
No booking is required. Just turn up at Chessington Sports Centre at the right time for your child's age group. The cost is £3.50 per person (£3.00 if paying cash) — payable on the day. Arriving a few minutes early is a good idea as sessions can be popular. Free parking is available on site (limited spaces).
My child has missed the May trials — can they still join a squad?
Yes. Players wishing to join mid-season should attend one of the squad's training sessions as a trial session. This lets both the player and coaches see whether the team is a good fit. After the session, coaches decide whether to offer a place. Contact Fi Martin on 07725 333 185 to arrange. More on trials →
What is the difference between CVL and National League?
The CVL (Central Venue League) is our development-focused competition for all abilities, from U10s to U18s. The National Basketball League is our top-talent pathway at U14s, U16s and U18s, competing at a significantly higher standard. Many of our players are registered in both — National League players are actively encouraged to play CVL for extra game time. Full pathway explained →
Can my child move from CVL to National League?
Yes — CVL is our primary talent pool for National League selection. Coaches monitor performance across all CVL teams and Friday Night Skills sessions throughout the season. Any player can be invited to trial for a National squad at any point. There are no permanent barriers.
What kit does my child need?
For Saturday sessions, just comfortable sportswear and non-marking indoor trainers. For squad players, club kit details are provided when a place is offered. Our kit supplier is Starting 5; warm-up tops and jumpers are available through Team Apparel. Contact Fi for details.
Can parents watch training and matches?
Parents are welcome to watch matches. For training sessions, coaches may ask parents to wait outside the sports hall — this is standard practice and helps players develop focus and independence. For home National League games, we provide seating for spectators. All supporters are expected to follow Basketball England's Code of Conduct: cheer positively and respectfully.
Who do I contact if I have a welfare concern?
Our Child Welfare Officer is Louise Wadham — the first point of contact for any safeguarding or welfare concerns. For general matters, Fi Martin (Club Manager) is also available on 07725 333 185. The club operates under Basketball England's safeguarding policies and all coaches hold current DBS checks.
Is basketball suitable for girls?
Absolutely. Kingston Wildcats welcomes players of all genders across all age groups. We also have a senior ladies team competing in the Surrey league, providing a clear continued pathway for female players after U18s. Basketball England's talent pathway also runs separately for girls from Aspire level upwards.
What happens if my child wants to stop playing?
Please let Fi know as soon as possible. If there is an issue with the team or experience, we would always rather hear about it and try to help first. Depending on how fees are structured for that season, we will discuss what applies on a case-by-case basis. Contact Fi on 07725 333 185.
